The Parliament of Catalonia has recently approved an amendment to the Law on Commerce, Services and Trade Fairs, in order to update the regulatory framework for retail and adapt it to new economic and social challenges.
Among other aspects, the new regulation aims to strengthen local retail through the recognition and protection of iconic, historic, and unique shops to ensure their continuity.
Barcelona City Council’s Department of Commerce, Restaurants and Food, together with the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape and Quality of Life, is working on an update to the current catalog in order to include new shops with strong roots in their neighborhoods and in the city as a whole.
To this end, we have launched a public tender, expected to be awarded this December, which will allow us to have the new catalog in place in 2027. At the same time, we want to incorporate the perspective of professionals in the sector to validate, complete, and strengthen the criteria that will guide the update of the catalog and other related elements.
At this session, we invite you to take part in shaping this update of the catalog. On the one hand, we will gather proposals on the criteria to be considered when adding future iconic, historic, and unique shops. On the other, we will collect ideas on the public policies needed to support, recognize, and promote these businesses.
