Workshop

Local retail as a driver of social cohesion

About this session:

Beyond its economic function, local retail plays a fundamental role in building more inclusive, connected, and resilient communities. This workshop will explore how local shops can actively contribute to collective well-being, strengthen neighborhood identity, and foster social cohesion.

The session will present several initiatives launched in Barcelona that illustrate this community role of retail. These include support programs for vulnerable people, awareness-raising and violence prevention campaigns, educational projects linked to schools, and initiatives that turn shops into climate shelters.

Drawing on testimonials and experiences from participating shops, the session will discuss the opportunities that collaboration between public administrations, the retail sector, and citizens offers for generating positive social impact. It will also reflect on how these actions help strengthen trust, coexistence, and a sense of belonging in neighborhoods.

The workshop will show that the value of local retail goes far beyond commercial activity, and that its ability to connect people and create support networks makes it a key player in tackling today’s social and urban challenges.Organizers:
